About Us

My association with Cavaliers started through my Uncle & Aunt (John & Erin Duncan), who were one of the first Cavalier owners and or breeders and founding members of the Cavalier Club in this part of New Zealand.

My first Cavalier, a blenheim dog , Ruapani Bobby Brown was an early thirteenth birthday present in 1975. Very shortly afterwards he was joined by tricolour Lambeth Lady Athene. Using my Uncle & Aunt's kennel name, Ruapani, we bred our first litter in1976 which produced NZ Ch Ruapani Athenian Princess, a specialty BIS winner. Nidra was established in 1977 jointly by my mother Joy, and I, although she no longer takes an active role with the dogs.

Athenian Princess mated to Aust Ch Homerbrent Tom Tom (UK), produced a litter of nine puppies. Which included speciality BIS winner Ch Jaunty Jade of Nidra and Jaunty Jacqui of Nidra who mated to NZ Ch Edenvalley Eadmund produced the tricolour specialty CC winner NZ Ch Florin of Leslie, who I campaigned to her title, unfortunately due to her owner's circumstances she was never mated.

In 1983, NZ Ch Edenvalley Eadmund (whose story appears elsewhere) became part of my life. Due to my own circumstances, for some years he was my only dog and I concentrated on showing him rather than breeding.

In 1991 I was again in a position to pursue a more active participation in the dog world and I was fortunate that my very good friends, Hans and Dianne Tyssen gave me co-ownership of Old Rowley Briar Rose. Unfortunately once in whelp she refused to eat, so my challenge was to get her to successfully raise a litter of puppies. Her first litter with me was to NZ Ch Edenvalley Eadmund and produced six tricolours which included Specialty BIS winner, NZ Ch Nidra Kings Ransome, NZ Ch Prestonville Pascali and Prestonville Rosemaree dam of Champion progeny in 4 countries.

For your information, in New Zealand if a bitch is jointly owned, then the puppies from a litter can be registered in either of the owner's kennel name, however all owners will be listed as breeders. Therefore due to my long association with Hans & Dianne Tyssen of Prestonville there are a number of Prestonville's co-bred by me and vice versa a number of Nidra's co-bred by Dianne and Hans.

Briar Rose was mated to A/NZ Ch Elvenhome Glencaird and produced the co-owned Aust Ch Prestonville Mulberry. Then mated to A/NZ Ch Elvenhome Glen Buck produced the co-bred and owned Specialty BIS & RBIS winner Prestonville Pass T'Buck who is also the sire of Ch Gramarye Melody Gold.

Rosemaree also came to reside with me and like her mother was mated to A/NZ Ch Elvenhome Glen Buck this litter produced the blenheim A/NZ Ch Nidra Bucksworth who is a multiple All Breeds in show winner and a Toy Specialty BIS winner.

His tricolour litter sister Prestonville Pennywise is a Specialty CC and Res CC winner. Rosemaree's other litter in New Zealand was to NZ Ch Grayson Glen Wylie and produced the tricolours Nidra Once in a Wyle & Nidra Feminine Wyles who both have successful progeny currently being shown, and the blenheims Aust Ch Prestonville Wyle U Wait and Thai Ch Prestonville Worth Wyle. Due to the friendship of mother and daughter team of Bev & Jodie Genders of Cavlamour Cavaliers,Queensland, Australia who campaigned Bucksworth to his Australian title, they entrusted me with the care of Aust Grand/NZ Ch Ashbury Purple Rain to campaign in New Zealand, along the way to his NZ title he won BIS at the only two specialist shows he attended.

As a pup in lieu of stud fee on Nidra Once in a Wyle, the well broken tricolour Harwarden Tri Once More joined us and at the age of nine months accompanied Purple Rain on his flight back to Australia. She ended up staying to produce two litters, in the first sired by Purple Rain was the tri boy Aust Ch Cavlamour Triple Trix. In the second litter mated to A/NZ Ch Elvenhome Charivari was another lovely tri Aust Ch Cavlamour Choir Boy. Tri Once More was mated to Multi International Champion Deeriem Thelonius at Anncourt (UK) and produced a litter of which we initially kept 3, a tri boy Nidra Tri Investments and 2 blenheim girls. AKC Ch Prestonville On Account with Nidra went to Hawaii and successfully gained her title over there. Nidra Joint Account with Prestonville will be used in our breeding programme. Another pup in lieu of stud fee from Nidra Once in a Wyle, Prinzton Wyle Time Goes by at Nidra (Tess) has also joined us and she has recently had her first litter.

Also residing here is Ch Prestonville in Liaison with Harwarden (aka Harry). Harry was initially owned by just Dianne Tyssen, but due to his exuberant and some what noisy personality, initially came to stay here, where a change of diet and large all day exercise area saw him become a much calmer and quieter dog, and I now co-own him with Dianne. We also mated the Nidra Once in a Wyle daughter Nidra Once and for all with Prestonville to Ch Prestonville Luukas with Prinzton, a Multi International Champion Deeriem Thelonius at Anncourt (UK) son. We have retained a brother and sister from that mating, Nidra Fortunately with Prestonville (Jake) and Nidra Fortuitously with Prestonville (Candy). Both are CC winners and Fortunately has been awarded a CC and two res CC under breed specialists.

We were very fortunate to be given the opportunity by her co-breeder Ngaire Brown to have the lovely Ch Prinzton Annukka (Bonnie). After a short time here she hit the show scene hard and went on to quickly gain her Ch title and BISS, Toy BIS, and Res BISS amongst a number of great wins including Best of Breed and the 2005 NZ National Dog Show. We have just had a litter from her x Nidra Fortunately with Prestonville

I have a special love of tricolours and have made a conscious decision, to concentrate on breeding and exhibiting tricolours. It is of major concern to me that many breeders are not taking the long term welfare of the breed into consideration and are instead concentrating on the immediate gratification of show wins and there by putting at risk the continued successful development of all 4 colours of the breed. I want to see the day when all of the four colours are as strong both numerically and in quality as each other.

In 1998 I began to investigate alternative feeding methods, my main concern was the state of the dental health of the dogs, after feeding for a number of years a premium kibble. I began to hear more and more about the BARF diet and after reading the books written by Dr Ian Billinghurst I changed to following his feeding methods. I have been delighted with the results, with many other benefits apart from the vast improvement to the dental health of all the dogs. I now raise all my puppies using BARF and while I do recommend it to my puppy owners, I do not make it a mandatory requirement.
